From beach cafes to quaint family-run inns to expensive fine dine restaurants – Cornwall has it all. The county is known for its organic meat, artisan cheese varieties and of course, the seafood. Most eateries serve platters of meat or seafood garnished with exotic berries, fruits, and plants (think wild petals). Here’s a list of some of the best Cornish eateries to visit when hunger pangs strike.
The Victorian Inn
A rather inviting dining pub located smack in the middle of a charming seaside village, The Victorian Inn whips up all of its preparations using farm fresh local ingredients. Try the homey pasta or their in-house special – chickpea and potato curry. For food nirvana, ask for the slow-cooked pork. The seafood menu includes cod, bass and other ‘freshly caught by locals’ varieties.
Kota
Jude Kereama serves his native land New Zealand’s robust and sour flavours in this charming quayside cottage. Kota literally translates into shellfish in Maori and boy do they serve a delectable range of seafood. Fancy a Mediterranean seafood platter? Kota is one of the rare Cornwall restaurants to serve it. If you aren’t majorly into seafood, try their sirloin steak, with accompaniments of the mushroom pie. Kota has a varied wine list too.
Tolcarne Inn
This is where you will probably get the best market fresh catch in Cornwall. The minimalist, no fuss local pub is located right next door to the harbour of Great Britain’s biggest fishing port. The menu is limited and varies daily depending on the day’s catch (which means you only sample the freshest fare). Ask ahead if they can prepare anything other than seafood.
Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove
Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove is a charming beach restaurant headed by one of the region’s most eminent chefs. Their freshly created, classic staples are designed to please everyone from comfort food seekers to eclectic cuisine lovers. From Benedict eggs to fish burgers to perfect salads and daily specials (based on the catch of the day), Ben Tunnicliffe does everything right. Bonus – generous Atlantic views and picturesque sunsets.
